It is with great joy that I introduce to you our newest staff member, Sister Michelle Collins!
Sister Michelle is a graduate of Valparaiso University and Luther Seminary. She was born in Kenya to American missionary parents and lived there until the age of 18 when she moved to the United States and began college. (She speaks Swahili as well as English!) She has been preparing to become a part of the ELCA’s deaconess community for the past few years and we hope to have her consecration service here at Advent before the end of the year. |
Sister Michelle is blessed to have both her parents, 5 brothers and 1 sister. She also has 4 nieces and 1 nephew (all under age 5). Her family members live in 5 different states (with her move to FL they’ll be in 6) stretching from MN to FL and from CO to CT. She has extensive experience with children and youth of various ages and cultures, a strong biblical and faith-centered foundation, and a vision for helping people grow in their faith.
Sister Michelle loves Jesus and is passionate about bringing God’s love and justice to people in need locally and globally. She also feels strongly led by the Holy Spirit to be involved in helping our congregation grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and as God’s light to our community.
She believes in intergenerational ministry, helping our congregation to see the truth about itself, that we are one body in Christ. She hopes to help us find many ways to celebrate and support each other’s gifts and ministries regardless of age, gender, or worship preference.
So when is she coming?
We are hoping to help Sister Michelle find her new Florida home in early September. She will then have to fly back to Minneapolis (her current home) for some previous commitments, (her mom’s consecration as a Deaconess for one!) but then she will be driving a moving truck from Minneapolis to Florida (we are sending a couple of people to help). She should be able to begin her ministry among us in earnest at the beginning of October.
A word about the Deaconess Community – (Or, “What is this ‘Sister’ business?”)
When a pastor is ordained in the ELCA, they are ordained into what is called “Word and Sacrament” ministry. Pastors are called to preach and teach, preside at Holy Communion, and equip the people of God to serve Christ in the community and in the world.
When a woman is consecrated as a deaconess, she is set apart for “Word and Service” ministry. Deaconesses are called to preach, teach, and serve in ministries that help God’s people grow in their faith and service to Christ in the community and in the world.
Just as the title, “Pastor,” helps those in a congregation to know and feel comfortable about who the congregation has called to be the one who leads them in worship, preaching, teaching, etc., the title, “Sister,” helps those in a congregation to know and feel comfortable about the Deaconess’ role and ministry in their midst.
Note: Although the Deaconess Community is a community of women in the ELCA who pray for each other, support each other, and see themselves as sisters in Christ, called to serve God in various ministries around the world, a deaconess is not a “Lutheran nun.” Sister Michelle is perfectly free to be married any time she would like J. (Perhaps a better association with the word ‘sister’ would be that of a sorority sister.) Although I know it may take some of us a while to adjust to her title, I believe we will all be so blessed by her ministry among us that it will soon become a reminder of God’s love and blessing .
God has blessed us with a gifted, passionate, disciple of Jesus Christ in Sister Michelle. Please join me in making her feel very welcome when she comes.
Celebrating with you,

|

God’s Blessings and Our Goals
At our latest Council meeting, we were discussing the many activities at Advent and the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. All those who witnessed the Youth talking about their mission trip could not miss how God touched them. Those who participated in the work days for the New Beginnings home were touched by God. Those who supported or participated in the back-to-school blessing and picnic were touched by God. The participants at the Willow Creek Leadership Conference were touched by God. Those who attended the workshop on “Why and How We Worship,” led by Pastor Dale Truscott, were touched by God. When we were in desperate need of leaders for our Sunday school, those answering God’s nudging were touched by God and the children of Advent were blessed. God has blessed Advent in these and in many, many more ways.
These examples of activities only touch the surface of what is happening at Advent. It is both a blessing and a challenge to have so many. Among the challenges is the lack of awareness and appreciation of the work that others invest in outside of one’s favored ministry. This leads to divisions in the congregation with small groups working in separate activities without cohesion.
Pastor Dave and I have taken on the twin tasks of improving both the integration of the congregation activities so that we act more as one and of improving the lay management of these activities. I think you, like me, can feel the effects of this focus.
As only one example, the Men’s Group has expanded the vision of its Oktoberfest to include a broad cross-section of Advent. The Men’s Group has joined with the Fellowship Commission and is planning a fall event for October 23rd that includes games and activities for the children and youth, which retains the traditional Oktoberfest food but adds hot dogs and hamburgers for the younger folks, and has activities in planning by the Small Groups. The Men’s Group and the Fellowship Commission have agreed that the proceeds from the event will be used to sponsor next year’s Youth mission trip. Their goal is to make it possible for more Youth to participate in the mission trip and to have their lives touched by God in this very special way.
At our leadership workshop on October 16, we will focus on the twin goals of cross-Advent integration and improvement of lay management. We ask anyone who wishes to make suggestions for improvements or wishes to participate in this workshop to contact either Pastor Dave or myself.
We thank God for his many blessings and ask him to guide us in our efforts to carry out his work.
Yours in Christ,
Bill Stanton

Your Time and Talent is Important to God

No living creature can match the physical strength and stamina of the common ant. One observer who watched an ant dragging a dead grasshopper weighed the bodies of both. The ant was pulling 60 times its own weight. To equal such a feat, a 150 pound man would have to drag a load of four and a half tons. What great gifts God has given to all creatures. We can only admire the remarkable powers of the tiny ant.
Human beings were made to do more than haul tons around. God has given you the power to help change the world for the better. You have no idea how much you can do to use your abilities to help mankind. Criticizing or complaining accomplishes little. As soon as you start “doing” even one little thing for Christ you will begin to realize your tremendous power.
Our abilities should be dedicated to God. The abilities of the successful business person are needed in God’s church. The trained, efficient teacher should be using his or her talent in the church, as well as in the schoolroom. The person gifted in music should contribute to an effective music program in the church. The doctor and nurse will find many ways of using their abilities for furthering the Christian church.
Young people in choosing their life vocation should ask how this profession could contribute to the work of the kingdom of Christ. What a blessing it would be if people were willing to tithe their abilities as well as their money! The secretary, the carpenter, the plumber, the painter, the teacher, the artist, the musician, the engineer, the manager as well as others can make vital contributions to the church by using their particular talents for the work of the church. If one’s work is legitimate, there is some way that that talent can be used for God’s work and glory here on Earth.
SEPTEMBER 25 AND SEPTEMBER 26 WILL BE ADVENT’S MINISTRY FAIR THIS YEAR. Please mark these dates on your calendar and participate in the Ministry Fair. Sign up with your best specific abilities to support God’s work here at Advent. |

The Pipe Organ Task Force

On Sunday August 1, 19 members of Advent met in the Knoedler Center to form a committee to find and fund a pipe organ for our sanctuary. Advent’s sanctuary was designed and built for just such an instrument and we feel that it’s time to start the process.
Traditional Lutheran worship is based on The Word, Sacrament, Music and Liturgy. We are known as the singing church, a tradition instituted by Martin Luther. Luther structured our liturgy along the line of the traditional mass but magnified the use of music; he was quoted as saying that Music was a gift from God and that it stirred the soul and chased the devil away. He argued in his writings that music was the next theology. As our musical tradition grew and was expanded by great musicians and composers such as J S Bach, so did the use of these magnificent instruments. Those of us who have worshiped in churches with pipe organs have felt the power and majesty that they bring; we understand why they are called the King of Instruments. We feel strongly that such an instrument will help us grow our church family and assist in following the great commission to bring God’s word to all.
The current organ fund balance is $6000; we need a bit more to move this project forward. In addition, we would not want this effort to detract in any way from current giving for church operations and outreach. This is a special project. If you feel as we do, then come join us. Dig a little deeper, work with us and we will soon have the critical mass we need to move forward.

Adult Bible Study 9:30am

Well, now that summer is almost over, the Adult Bible Study group will reconvene on September 19th at 9:30 AM in the Education Building. Our first 8 weeks will be spent in a study of God's ANGELS. If you think angels belong in the same category as sea monsters and trolls, think again. Thirty four of the Bible's 66 books talk about angels in detail. Every New Testament writer confirms their existence. Jesus himself referred to angels as real beings who are involved in every realm of human activity. Angels are mentioned 250 times in the scriptures.
Come and explore with us for some or all of the following studies: Angels Among Us; Jesus and the Angels; Dealing With Demons; Guarded by Angels.
I look forward to spending this quality time with you.

New Beginnings Ministry provides transitional housing for women who are coming out of correctional facilities. New Beginnings home is a highly structured discipleship program. They believe that true transformation can only happen through developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The women voluntarily choose to come into the program with a sincere desire to make a fresh start. They understand that without change there can be no new beginning. Their mission is to provide a home where they will find unconditional love and support. In their new home they are trained, encouraged, and assisted in finding employment. They are also mentored as they transition into responsible positions in society.

Men's Group News

Aloha,
I hope that your summer has been fun and successful. The Men's group has continued to meet, fellowship, and work for Christ's Kingdom.
Accomplishments this summer:
Helped with the purchase of batteries for the golf cart
Assisted in the removal of the "jungle" at the New Beginnings Ministry (in the heat!)
Worked at Advent Work Day...more heat
Helped sponsor the funding for Back-to-school picnic water slide.
We are now planning with the other Small Groups at Advent to make the Oktoberfest have more activities for younger families at Advent. Stay tuned for further announcements. Don't worry! We'll still have beer and brats.
Please come to the monthly Men's Meetings and try to help out at the work events with us. Working for Christ's ministries has helped us grow in our faith and friendships. I get "fed" in church, and I apply what I "ate" by working...this has worked for me.
If any younger men...Amos Jones is already attending...would like to attend, please come to our next meeting on Sept. 18th at 9 AM. Time is making all of us older, and if the Men's group is to remain a functioning and giving ministry to our church, we'll need more support from you. At the last Work Day, we had five (5) older workers...me included. It was brutal work moving more mulch...last month 23 yards (thank you Jones family and David Holub)...around our church to keep it presentable for you and visitors. After 3 hours in 90 plus heat, leaning up against the tires of our trucks to get some shade we thought...we need more workers. Please consider coming to the Men's group. There are no dues, and the pay for the work you do for Christ can't be beat.
Mahalo,
Rudy Pacarro
Our next men’s breakfast will be Saturday, Sept 18th at 9:00 am

Advent Lutheran Church Women

Below is the schedule for activities of the Women of Advent:
General Meeting - 1st Monday month at 10:00 am (September - May)
We will meet on Sept. 7th due to Labor Day the first Monday
Quilting - 2nd Monday of each month at 10:00 am
Bible Study - 3rd Monday of each month at 10:00 am
Quilting - 4th Monday of each month at 10:00 am
The Women of Advent are invited to attend the Space Coast Conference Fall Gathering on Saturday, October 9, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Melbourne.
The cost of this event will be $15 per person to cover the travel, honorarium, and lunch for their guest presenter, Cristy Fossum who is from Columbia, North Carolina. Cristy is the author of two books in the Sunday by Sunday series. She also gives presentations and workshops. She will share with us on the theme "Christian Community: Blessing and Challenge."
Because of the cost of this event, Jo Ann Young, Space Coast Conference President, is asking each congregation to get at least five women to attend.
We also have a chance to purchase Ms. Fossum's books (Sunday by Sunday Volume I or II, or both). Each book costs $16. Large print books cost $18 a book. These books must be ordered in advance so Ms. Fossum can send them to St. Timothy in advance of the meeting. The orders, and payment of the books, must be in by September 20. Book order forms will be at the Welcome Center at the back of the church.
Please come to this event. I know you will have fun, and will get to know more women in our community from outside our church. Jean Ott |

Advent Youth : Soul Fusion Student Ministries

September is a busy month for Advent Youth!
On September 4th, Soul Fusion will be joining in the next Make a Difference Work Day at New Beginnings. They are heading the project of painting the wall that surrounds the back of the property with a mural, designed by the Youth and approved by the Youth leaders and the New Beginnings residents.
Soul Fusion is also gearing up to attend Night of Joy on September 10th for a night of music, fun and fellowship at the Magic Kingdom! They are looking forward to enjoying this trip with the rest of the congregation, as this had been a youth only event in years past. It will be exciting to have the church join together for such a worshipful experience for all ages!
We are expecting Sister Michelle Collins to be in-place by mid-September. The Advent Youth Leadership Team is eager to begin working with Sister Michelle and using her fresh ideas for Advent’s Youth Ministries. The Adult Youth Leadership Team includes: Karen Jesse, Alberta Jo Parker, Eddie Wolchick, Cindy Gordon, Terri Gordon, and Megan Dickman.
Youth Mission Trip, July 3-10, 2010: Soul Fusion had a fantastic time on the Youth Mission Trip to Birmingham, AL and they sincerely thank Advent members for their support of this mission trip. Next year's trip is already in the books for June 2011 as the youth will travel to Newport, Tennessee. An informational meeting regarding next year's trip is being scheduled for late September.
Respectfully Submitted,
Terri Gordon

Advent Backpack Project

Over the past 4 years I have been involved in this fundraising project to provide backpacks filled with personal products to the homeless during the Christmas Season. Now I am seeking your assistance to help with this worthy cause. On October 2nd and 3rd there will be a table set up to display backpacks. This year we are going to do something a little different. Instead of continuing to collect items to fill the backpacks, we are asking you to sponsor a backpack for only $25.00. The backpacks have the following inside of them: sunscreen, water bottle, flashlight, can opener, toothbrush, toothpaste, ziploc bags, washcloth, soap, socks, hat, and a sweatshirt. Please consider being a sponsor of a backpack. It is a heart wrenching experience to see the line waiting for us at the Daily Bread to give these backpacks out in December. These people look at these backpacks as Christmas gifts. Where a lot of us and our children receive electronics, movies, CD’s, video games etc., these men, women, and children receive a backpack with basic items. If you would like to be a sponsor, please write your check to Advent Lutheran Church and put “Backpack Project” on the memo line. Thank you in advance for helping to support this wonderful ministry.
Many thanks to Joanna Spina and Ocean Potion for providing all of the sunscreen needed for these backpacks. Also to those who have donated items regularly for the last 9 months. Your help has been greatly appreciated.

Evangelical Lutheran Worship

Thank you for your generous support of the new hymnal project. The final tally is that 250 Evangelical Worship Pew Editions were donated. All of the hymnals that were donated “in honor of” or “in memory of” have had bookplates put in them and are in the sanctuary. If you donated a hymnal and haven’t been able to find the one you donated, please feel free to look through the pews in the sanctuary, or to ask for help in finding it. It may not always be in the pew where you sit, but it is there helping someone else to worship.
Many members of the Worship and Music Commission helped by giving temple talks, sitting outside at the table taking orders and answering questions, counting the donations, and giving a LOT of support. Thank you!
In addition to purchasing the hymnals, there was enough extra money donated to purchase materials to make the ribbon bookmarks that were inserted in July. A committed team of people, led by Lynn Borchers, assembled the bookmarks. They included Karen Hagen, Betty Porada, Betty Symons, Marge Olson, Carol Marshall, Lori Jahn, Li Klein, Ella Holub, Susie Jahn, Kay Malito, and Laurel Jolly.
Several supporting resources were purchased (from the extra money donated) that will help our congregation to more fully utilize the ELW pew editions. Vocal Descants for the Church Year provides more than 250 descants and counter-melodies for the hymn tunes. The arrangements are reproducible for the choir and musicians and they are arranged by hymn tune for easy reference.
Evangelical Lutheran Worship Accompaniment Edition for Simplified Keyboard includes all of the service music and hymn material from the pew edition prepared in easy-to-play arrangements. This edition is an excellent resource for both worship use and for home use. Unlike the full accompaniment edition which is 3 volumes, this is conveniently arranged into one spiral soft-cover volume.
Musician’s Guide to Evangelical Lutheran Worship is a two-part educational resource in one volume. The first section is essays on styles and practices. The second section is a set of interpretations for every musical piece in the pew edition. It includes suggestions for tempo and style, and it refers to essays in the first section for more information on how to effectively lead these pieces. It is a valuable resource for anyone who is called upon to lead the music of the assembly, both accompanist, choir director and worship planner.
These supporting resources are physical evidence that the Evangelical Lutheran Worship is more than a hymnal, it is a comprehensive resource that will serve the worship life of the church for many years. These books may be found in the bookcase behind the organ in the sanctuary, but they are meant to be used! Please come and view them, read the articles and try the music. Let your imagination take you to new ideas for how we can use music in the worship life of our congregation.
Thank you again!
“When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, It is as though the whole creation cried: Alleluia!” (text by Fred Pratt Green, Hymn 851 ELW)

Habitat for Humanity. Don Rydeen reported that Thrivent has asked if we are interested in helping build a home in 2011. This could mean $4,000 or more to Advent. It was decided to hold off a decision until Don has more specific information. Preliminary commission consensus is no for several reasons.
Serene Harbor & Women’s Center. Shirley Piper reported that the needs of these 2 organizations are very similar and she will continue to purchase monthly supplies of toiletries. This is a great need and Shirley will continue arranging for deliveries. Nice “thank you” received from the Women’s Center.
DOCK. Shirley reports over 50 kids came to the DOCK for the summer program. Shirley requested support for the “My Brother’s Keeper” backpack/back-to-school supplies program. It was decided to allocate $100 for this but if the need is great, Shirley can use up to $200. Pastor reported that he and Lori are supporting the music program at the DOCK and that Pastor hopes to debut a band at the next BNDC breakfast.
The Haven. Judy reported that dinners are being supplied by Advent to the Haven once a month as promised. Judy continues to search for help to have enough volunteers so folks would only have to deliver a meal once a year. Please contact Judy at 253-6028 if you would like to help make dinners.
SVAAC Community Care and Advent Food Pantry. Kristina Petrik reports that $587 was distributed to families in need last month. Food requests continue to increase. Fortunately our congregation has responded with generous food donations. It was decided to allocate $500 to SVAAC as a part of Advent’s continued contribution.
Bread Ministry. This ministry continues to bring in $200+ each month for our use in community service.
Brevard Interfaith Coalition. The Commission decided to offer Advent's facility for the February meeting of this coalition.
Kristina reported that she will supply more “Homeless Handout” packages in conjunction with the youth group.
New Beginnings. Kristina and Don reported that many Advent volunteers came out to work tirelessly in the yard and on the New Beginnings home.
Homeless Veterans Shelter. Tammy Leahy reported that Bill Leahy has delivered a trunk full of much needed supplies to this Shelter in Cocoa. Additional supplies are in great need and Tammy and Bill would like to deliver them and take a tour of the facility. The commission allocated $200 for this. Doug Torgerson reported that there is also a Veterans Shelter on Fee Ave. in Melbourne. They can use clothing and have a pick-up service for donated furniture and other large items.
Helping Hands. Doug reported that he has contacted this faith-based thrift store in Cocoa where donated items such as clothing, furniture and appliances are sold. The proceeds are used to help the homeless in Cocoa. Daily Bread will also take clothing for the homeless as will His Place.
Advent’s Backpack Ministry. It was suggested by Pastor that this annual event should be a part of the C.S. ministries. All agreed. Kristina has the lead and Judy and Tammy have volunteered to help Kristina in the “marketing” of this ministry to our congregation.

Hello from your Property Commissioner Pete Jolly.
The first work day of Aug (actually Saturday July 31st) was an unscheduled work day to clean the playground equipment and toys in preparation for the preschool open house on Aug 4th. The equipment and toys were pressure washed, checked and repositioned in the play ground. Thanks to Don Hagen, Don Rydeen and Pete Jolly for their work.
The regular “first Saturday” work day was held on Aug 7th. Work accomplished included spreading mulch in a number of planters around the church grounds and removing the two dead palm trees in the middle west parking lot planter that were lost due to the cold weather this last winter. Thanks to Don Hagen, David Bedwell, Rudy Pacarro, Don Rydeen and Pete Jolly for their hard (and hot) work on these projects.
Thanks to Ron Klein and Audrey and Harlan Nassen for continued maintenance of their “islands” in the parking lot area.
Due to the first Saturday in September (Sept 4th) falling on the Labor Day Weekend, our regular September work day will be scheduled for the following Saturday (Sept 11th). Planned work and a reminder will be sent out closer to the scheduled work day.
Parish Administrator, Carol Ann Maynard; Sexton, Don Rydeen and Property Commissioner, Pete Jolly, have held several meetings to discuss and plan for several long range projects and major repair jobs. Among the repair jobs discussed is the repair of the stucco on the Knoedler Center, painting of the Knoedler Center and cleaning of the exterior of the Sanctuary building. Estimates are being obtained for these particular jobs and will be reviewed and discussed with Council before work goes forward.

Joyce Meyer 2010 Conference Tampa, FL

Each session will include a powerful message from Joyce and worship with Matt Redman.
LOCATION: St. Pete Times Forum
401 Channelside Drive
Tampa, FL 33602
Reasons to Attend
If there’s one thing people who attend a Joyce Meyer conference agree on…it’s that everyone will have fun.
See Joyce Live
You may have read her books or seen her on TV—but there is nothing like the experience of seeing her in person.
Life-Changing Message
At each and every conference and each and every session, Joyce can’t wait to teach a new, Bible-based, world-transforming message to people of all ages.
Relentless Prayer
Before each session, every single volunteer, stagehand, production person, worship musician and, of course, Dave and Joyce, pray that you will walk away from the conference a new person—restored, revived and refreshed.
Spiritual Vacation
People talk about taking a vacation to the beach or the mountains to let their mind rest. Ever thought of taking a spiritual vacation? That’s exactly what attending a Joyce Meyer conference is like—a little R&R for your spirit.
The Most Beautiful Moment
Attend a Joyce Meyer conference and you’ll see something amazing: Thousands of people worshipping one God. It’s awe-inspiring to be in an auditorium packed with people all with the same goal of worshipping.
Everyone Is Invited
Men and women of all ages are welcome. Bring husbands, wives, daughters, sons, parents or grandparents. Everyone will have fun and experience God in a new way.
Free
And the final reason to attend a Joyce Meyer conference is because it’s free! Where else can you worship with the world’s best Christian worship bands, hear a life-changing message and encounter God with thousands of other people for 3 days free of charge?
